Republic got $9.6 million in TIF money from the city to build their factory in part because of there green energy practices. Before the settlement local alderman vowed to investigate Republic and try to recover some of the TIF money they received just seven years ago. They build the building sold it to an investment firm who sold it to Wrigley and then rented the space back at an inflated rate. So they cashed out and now they are taking the money and running out of state. This is a historic victory, let just hope that now that the politicians will follow through on their promise to investigate Republic and recover all the money they stole from tax payers and worker to create job.

Interesting take. You're right, everything I've read portrays Republic as a dying, old manufacturer of outdated products. I suppose businesses like Republic, making replacement windows and such, would benefit alot from Obama's proposed green stimulus plans. If the government is going to undertake a big effort to make public buildings more energy efficient, replacement windows and doors should be big business. (BTW, I link to your post in my blog.)

Worker-run companies have always had a hard time surviving in this country. The Republic workers may have thought a takeover was a hopeless cause during the current credit crunch. Perhaps some progressive Democrats in Congress should push for a portion of the big planned federal stimulus package to consist of loan funds for worker cooperatives.

Great piece and of course, very worrisome. I instantly think of Avi Lewis and Naomi Klein's movie "The Take" about worker takeovers of the factories in Argentina.

Though I think these workers just want to get the paycheck that they rightfully deserve, I wonder if the thought has crossed their minds that they could probably keep making and selling windows without the consent of the company owners or banks--no one has been successful in kicking them out of the factory yet, what is to stop them?
